| Species: | Australian Hobby (Falco (Falco) longipennis)| This Photo: | In Flight | Other name: | Little Falcon | Thank you Antoni Camozzato for confirming the id of this species for us General Species Information: Found on Ellura (in the Murray Mallee, SA), Coastal Areas and elsewhere We had these marked as Inland Australian Hobby (Falco (Falco) longipennis ssp murchisonianus), but (blackfalcon) said "There have been very few studies done on Australia’s hobbies and to my knowledge there is no scientific data eg DNA analysis to support the existence of subspecies. The birds are not geographically isolated and are free to disperse throughout Australia. It follows then that they can’t be ID’d to subspecies level based on location alone. The ssp have the same physical dimensions differing only in plumage colour, being lighter in the arid regions. They are more likely ecotypes in accordance with Gloger’s rule. A good PhD for someone, cheers."
