General Species Information: Found on Ellura (in the Murray Mallee, SA) and elsewhere Males and females can be separated by the amount of black on the head. For males the black stops above the eye, with females it fully encompasses the eye. Females are actually prettier than the male, unusually for birds. Very pretty black & white chequered rump. Adults have yellow/orange legs and eye-ring. Orange stripe on its wings when flying. The beak is upturned, mainly black, with yellow base & gape. Juveniles have a much lesser degree of yellow on the legs & eye-ring (going to grey/white). Their black cap is also slightly striated with white feathers. Their beak is also pale, not black. Can often be found upside down on tree trunks & branches.
