For males the black stops above the eye, with females it fully encompasses the eye. Females are actually prettier than the male, unusually for birds. Very pretty black & white chequered rump. Adults have yellow/orange legs and eye-ring. Orange stripe on its wings when flying. The beak is upturned, mainly black, with yellow base & gape. Juveniles have a much lesser degree of yellow on the legs & eye-ring (going to grey/white). Their black cap is also slightly striated with white feathers. Their beak is also pale, not black. Can often be found upside down on tree trunks & branches.
