| Species: | Thread-waisted Wasp (Ammophila sp)| This Photo: | 🔍S3, Adult Female, profile🔎 | Thank you Bernhard Jacobi for helping with the id of this species for us General Species Information: Found on Ellura (in the Murray Mallee, SA) and elsewhere ~28mm long. These have been considered to be Parapsammophila eremophila for a while. However, we were concerned that there were two different forms; one with black feet and one with orange feet (like here). Note the orange feet ones we've found are all female. We found the original description only to find it's described as "Entirely Black", with different wing colour, etc. Also, it was only known from near Alice Springs, and was shorter at 24-25mm. As such, looking at the genus's original description, as well as Bernhard's suggestion, and id'ed this one as Ammophila sp. Hopefully one day a species name might be found for them. We have since found a black legged variety, but it also happens to be male (we think, can't be 100% sure). So perhaps the two different forms we've seen on-line are gender variations. We have left it under this species and assumed the leg colour is due to sexual dimorphism.
