The primary way we've done it is to look at the flower stem. If it reaches near, or goes above the height of the leaves, it's D. revoluta. If it in the middle height of the plant, then it's D. brevicaulis. D. brevicaulis also tends to be shorter (~0.5m vs ~0.9->1.4m), but this doesn't help with young plants. There are differences in the leaves, but this is much harder to understand or see in photo's.
