They are petal-less with only 2 anthers per flower. The 5 pointed star shape are the sepals of the flower. It appears the fruits form behind this as can be seen in the bulging. Hopefully we'll revisit this at the right time to see what the fuits turn into. In the field we thought these were Salsola australis seedlings, but our guide said they never grow any larger. We then found they matched this species. While Near Threatened regionally, they are locally common. They seem to love sand. With the Bud shot, it can be difficult to make out, but the buds appear as the 5 point star folded up; behind the flowers.
