Species: | Crepitating Spurthroat (Scurra marmoralis)This Photo: | S2, Male, ventral | Thank you Matthew Connors for identifying and Rod Lowther (Rover-Rod) for confirming the id of this species for us General Species Information: Found on Ellura (in the Murray Mallee, SA), the Riverland and elsewhere ~27mm long female. We thought this was Halgania Grasshopper (Histrioacrida roseipennis); the antennae are MUCH shorter with this species compared to H. roseoppenis amoung other things. Crepitate (in the common name) means to make a crackling sound. Notice the teeth on top of the hind legs, probably helping make the crepitations. Matthew said "They make the sound by hitting their wings with their back legs as they fly."
